Vice President Vows to Uphold Biden’s Vision and Addresses Concerns Over Presidential Succession After Shaky Presidential Debate.
Post-Debate Fall Out
After President Joe Biden’s nearly delirious debate performance last week, his second in command Vice President Kamala Harris has made it known that she will continue to fiercely defend her President.
Harris Shows Support
Harris has defended him both privately and publicly as the best candidate for the job, while also acknowledging the fact that she would succeed him on the presidential ticket if Biden decided to (or forced to due to health concerns) step down from his position.
Focusing on Biden’s Confidence
Several close sources have talked with NBC News and shared that Harris is still focused on encouraging Biden and building up both his confidence and the voters confidence, her allies have confirmed that she would be prepared to step into the role if need be.
Possible Pushback
Many of the vocal allies, including prominent Black Democrats, have reassured her that any attempt to push her out of the role would be met with fierce pushback in her support.
Civil Rights Activist Shows Support
Civil Rights activist and MSNBC host Rev Al. Sharpton said, “I think she’s done very well on her feet,” continuing, “She’s always been good. I think she’s just better. And I think that she’s better than any of the names that have been floated out there.”
Ready to Fight Back
Sharpton said, “If anyone tried it, they better know I’m on the tracks to block the train from going ahead,” adding, “When people voted for Biden to be the nominee, they were voting for the Biden-Harris ticket. How are you going to now come and separate that ticket and throw it open?”
No Excuse
“There is no legitimate excuse. The calculation is ‘We can do this because she’s a woman and because she’s Black.’ Well, Blacks and women should not tolerate that calculation.”
Thinking on Her Feet
Immediately after the presidential debate, Kamala Harris took to TV to fiercely defend her running mate President Biden. People close to the campaign have shared that Harris was given no time to prepare for this speech, and had received no official talking points from the campaign team.
Looking at the Long Game
Instead, she spoke from the heart and reminded Democrat voters that she is “not going to spend all night with you talking about the last 90 minutes when I’ve been watching the last 3½ years of performance.”
Trump’s Track Record
The Democrat party has quickly followed her lead after she reminded the public of Trump’s track record and the lies and damage he has caused our country, reaffirming the need to keep him out of office.
Previous Criticism
Kamala Harris has received quite a bit of criticism over the last presidential term, mainly that she is ineffective in her position. But after her recent circulation of interviews and her quick thinking after the debate, people are more open to her possible presidential seat if Biden steps down.
Rallying the Troops
Harris has been busy, spending much of her time making and receiving phone calls from dozens of party leaders, activists and donors to reassure them that supporting Biden’s bid has the best chance to unify the party.
We Will Not Back Down
Harris said, “We will not back down,” continuing, “We will follow our president’s lead. We will fight, and we will win. … Joe Biden has devoted his life to fighting for the people of our country. In this moment, I know all of us are ready to fight for him.”
“Unforgiving” Opinions
Democratic political strategist Leah D. Daughtry agrees with Harris’s sentiment, saying “President Biden had a bad night,” adding, “I think to ignore the body of his work over these last 3½ years and what he has actually delivered in the course of his presidency is really quite unforgiving and quite stunning, in my opinion.”
The United Front
Even with Biden and Harris’s unified front, including her last minute presence at the 4th of July celebration, many top Democratic lawmakers and donors still doubt her ability to succeed as the presidential nominee if Biden steps down. Other possible candidates include Governors Gavin Newsom, Josh Shapiro, J.B. Pritzker, and Gretchen Whitmer.
The Money Involved
Another piece of the puzzle is the Biden campaign fund, which was at $91.2 million dollars as of May 31st. Should Biden step down, Harris would be in control of the funds. Her supporters have already started to strategize about the possibility.
Interesting Data
On Tuesday, CNN released a poll that showed that Harris would beat Biden in a hypothetical match-up with Trump. The data showed that 47% of registered voters would support Trump, and 45% would support Harris.
The Stakes are Higher Than Ever
Harris remains true to her statement after the debate, stating, “Four things remain true before that debate and after that debate: The stakes are higher than they’ve ever been.”
What We Are Fighting For
Continuing, “This person [Trump] is a threat to our democracy. We have all of the right issues on our side in terms of what we are fighting for. And you know the fourth thing that remains true before the debate and after debate? Trump is still a liar.”
