Following President Biden’s decision to suspend his re-election bid, Vice President Kamala Harris has announced her presidential campaign, leading some to wonder if America is getting ready for its first female president.
Boosting Trump
Earlier this month, an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump significantly boosted his popularity among his supporters and strengthened his position as the GOP nominee.
Stepping Out of the Race
After Trump’s popularity increased so much that his Presidential win seemed almost to be a certainty, President Biden decided to step out of the race in the face of increasing pressure from Democratic lawmakers and donors.
Biden’s Greatest Honor
In his statement, Biden stated, “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your president… I believe it is in the best interests of my party and the country for me to stand down.”
Biden’s Endorsement
After announcing he would not seek re-election, President Biden endorsed his Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Biden’s Best Decision
In his endorsement, Biden said, “I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
Grassroots Donations
Biden renounced his campaign and endorsed Kamala, which spurred an influx of grassroots donations, with Harris’ campaign raising nearly $50 million within 24 hours.
Biden’s Statement on Endorsement
In a public letter, Biden expressed his support for Harris, saying, “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made.”
Harris’ Reaction to Biden’s Decision
After Biden made his decision to step down from his re-election campaign, Harris described Biden’s decision as a “selfless and patriotic act,” and highlighted his commitment to putting the American people first.
Honored to Be Endorsed
Harris stated, “I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination.”
Uniting the Democratic Party
Harris then went on to say, “I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda.”
Support From Democratic Leaders
Many prominent Democrats have also already endorsed Harris, including former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Honored to Support
Former President Bill Clinton said, “We are honored to join the President in endorsing Vice President Harris and will do whatever we can to support her.”
Historical Significance of Harris’ Candidacy
Harris’s potential candidacy is also a historic moment for the United States as she could become the first woman and person of South Asian descent to serve as president.
Challenges and Scrutiny Facing Harris
However, Harris faces some serious scrutiny over her previous campaign performance and how people view her efforts on issues such as immigration and voting rights.
Polling and Public Opinion
A recent AP-NORC poll found that about 60% of Democrats believe Harris could perform well as president, although there is significant opposition and uncertainty among some party members.
Slightly Better Than Biden
In the end, Harris’ approval ratings are only slightly higher than Biden’s, with 38.6% of Americans approving of her performance as vice president.
Democratic Party Dynamics
There have also been discussions within the Democratic Party around the possibility of a “mini primary” to consider other candidates before the Democratic National Convention.
Potential Rivals
Potential challengers to Harris’s Presidential aspirations include the likes of Gov. Gavin Newsom and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, but Harris remains a strong frontrunner.
Is Trump Worried?
However, it seems unlikely that Former President Trump is worried about Harris’s election campaign as he has never really seemed to take her that seriously in the first place.
More Unfit
In a recent rally for his campaign, Trump said, “Which of their candidates is more unfit to be President — Sleepy Crooked Joe Biden, or Laughing Kamala?”
