Florida School Considered Firing Teacher Over Trans Daughter’s Sports Participation

Jessica Norton works as a computer information specialist at Monarch High School in Broward County, Florida, where she has been an employee of the district for seven years, also serving as the junior varsity volleyball coach.

The board voted to suspend Norton for 10 days without pay rather than terminate her employment, citing it as a first offense and compromise amidst differing opinions.

Emphasizing the board’s consideration of Norton’s intent and previous employment record, Hixon said, “This isn’t somebody who abused or harmed children.”

The Florida High School Athletic Association also fined Monarch High School $16,500 for the violation, placing the school on probation and temporarily removing several administrators.
