Texas Cuts DEI: Scholarships Frozen and Students Left in Limbo

Student scholarships in Texas are taking a big hit from the state’s new implementation of Senate Bill 17, banning Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs at public universities and leaving some students unsure if they can still afford to go to school.

Earlier this year, the Texas Senate passed Senate Bill 17, which bans Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs in publicly funded universities, leaving many institutions confused about how to handle the transition.

Over 130 Scholarships Frozen or Modified

Since the bill passed, over 131 scholarships have been either frozen or modified throughout the state, affecting some of the state’s largest institutions like Texas A&M and the University of Texas.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Texas A&M University has frozen 80 scholarships, and the University of Texas has been forced to modify or freeze 45 of its own scholarships.

There is also the JoyLynn Hailey Reed Endowment for Intellectual Entrepreneurship, the Johnson-Bates Respect Scholarship, and the Inclusion Endowed Presidential Scholarship among the frozen scholarships at the University of Texas.
