The controversial Algerian boxer, who has been dominating both the Olympic Boxing ring and headlines all across social media after she was accused of being transgender, is back in the news once again after filing a criminal complaint in France for “aggravated cyber harassment” against high-profile figures like J.K. Rowling and Elon Musk.

Who Is Imane Khalif?

Imane Khalif is a female boxer representing Algeria in the Paris 2024 Olympic Summer Games in the women’s welterweight category.

Transgender Accusations

Where female boxing typically receives very little media attention in the summer Olympics, this year was different after Khalif’s dominant performance brought on accusations that she is a trans woman.

In a fight against Italian boxer Angela Carini, a 25-year-old boxer from Naples, Italy, Khalif was so dominant that people began suspecting that Khalif was not actually a cis-gender woman.

After fighting Khelif, Carini said, “I felt a severe pain in my nose, and with the maturity of a boxer, I said ‘enough,’ because I didn’t want to, I didn’t want to, I couldn’t finish the match.”

Failing a Test

After such a dominating fight, people began looking into Khalif’s past and found out that she had failed a gender eligibility test by the International Boxing Association (IBA).

The IBA disqualified Khelif from women’s competition after their medical tests suggested she might be “biologically male” due to a “problem with chromosomes and hormones.”

Despite her previous disqualification, Khelif was allowed to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), something many people were quick to disagree with.

After Khalif dominated the fight against Carini and her failed test came into the public spotlight, people all across the internet began to harass her and question her womanhood.

The Filing of the Complaint

In response to the harassment, Khelif has filed a complaint in France, targeting people who spread harmful and misleading information about her on social media.

French law allows complaints to be filed against unknown perpetrators, which allows the investigation to include people who anonymously posted their cyber harassments. As reported by Variety, the Paris Prosecutors office wrote, “On Aug. 13, (The National Center for the Fight Against Online Hatred) contacted the OCLCH (Central Office for the Fight Against Crimes Against Humanity and Hate Crimes) to conduct an investigation into the counts of cyber harassment due to gender, public insult because of gender, public incitement to discrimination and public insult because of origin.”

Specific Allegations Against Public Figures

The complaint names Elon Musk and J.K. Rowling, among others, for their roles in amplifying the false narrative that Khelif was a man competing in women’s boxing. Their posts contributed to a widespread online smear campaign against her during the Olympics.

Targeting Big Names

Khalif’s complaint has received even more attention thanks to some of the famous names listed in the lawsuit, like Elon Musk and J.K. Rowling, who have been accused of amplifying the false narrative that Khalif is a man.

Potential Legal Consequences

According to French law, if the people accused of harassing Khalif are found guilty, those involved in the cyber harassment could face up to five years in prison and fines of up to $320,000.

Involvement of Other Public Figures

Other notable figures, including Donald Trump and Logan Paul, were also involved in the controversy, with Trump tweeting about keeping men out of women’s sports and Paul initially spreading misinformation before retracting his statements. Some other notable figures are also implicated in this case, like former President Donald Trump and Youtuber Logan Paul, who furthered the transgender accusations on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.

Defending Khalif

Khalif’s Lawyer, Nabil Boudi, has come out to defend both Khalif and the lawsuit for taking on those who needlessly harassed the boxer for such a ridiculous accusation.

International Implications

“The prosecutor’s office for combating online hate speech has the possibility to make requests for mutual legal assistance with other countries,” Boudi stated, pointing to the global reach of the investigation.

When discussing Trump’s involvement, Boudi said, “[Donald] Trump tweeted, so whether or not he is named in our lawsuit, he will inevitably be looked into as part of the prosecution.”

“To clear her name. This is the message she has conveyed and what she expects from justice,” Boudi emphasized.
