Trump’s new running mate is backtracking on an interview he made back in 2021, which saw him slam female Democratic leaders for being “childless” and “crazy cat ladies.”
Vance In Hot Water
Donald Trump’s new running mate, Sen. JD Vance, has made headlines this week – and been roundly criticized – for some fiery comments he made on Fox News back in 2021.
Personal Digs at Democrats
In an interview with Tucker Carlson, he made personal digs at Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democrats.
“Crazy Cat Lady” Comments
Vance described female Democratic lawmakers as “crazy cat ladies” who were unhappy with their lives and wanted “to make the rest of the country miserable too.” Following these comments, he made direct reference to Harris and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Resurfacing in 2024
Since his appointment as the GOP vice presidential nominee, these past comments have resurfaced online. And people are not happy.
Vance Draws Ire From High-Profile Women
Commentators on both sides of the political spectrum slammed Vance for his statements, and he even drew ire from high-profile women, including politician Hilary Clinton and actor Jennifer Aniston.
Backtracking the Comments
Now, the Ohio senator has backtracked on these comments, accusing online commentators of taking his previous statements “out of context” as well as blowing them “out of proportion.”
Fox News Appearance
On Sunday night, Vance Fox News’s Trey Gowdy, in an attempt to provide more context. During the conversation, he urged listeners to “pray” and “have sympathy” for people without children, as well as attacking Democratic policies that he considered “anti-family.”
Not Their Fault
Vance acknowledged that many people don’t have control over their ability to have children, something he was criticized for when the comments resurfaced.
“We Should Pray for Those People”
“Of course, for a whole host of reasons, it’s not going to work out for some people,” he said. “We should pray for those people and, of course, have sympathy for them.”
Comments Were a Mistake
Gowdy, who initially claimed that Vance’s comments might offend and disappoint potential Republican voters, then suggested that his comments were likely just a mistake.
A Better Way to Phrase Things
“Those of us who talk for a living make mistakes. We say things that, in hindsight, we might phrase differently, better, or not at all,” Gowdy said.
Childless People Across the US
Both he and Vance agreed that there are childless people across the US who love the USA, are invested in the future of the country, and still stand for family values even without children of their own.
Diversion Tactics
During the same discussion, Vance accused Democrats of using the comments as a diversion tactic, claiming that the Democratic Party does not have the political policies to prop up a campaign.
Looking at the “Full Context”
“If you look at the full context of what I said, it’s very clear the Democrats have tried to take this thing out of context and blow it out of proportion, which is what they always do because they don’t have an agenda to run on themselves,” he told Gowdy.
What Are Americans Most Concerned About?
“If you look at what the American people are most concerned about, it’s not an out-of-context quip I made three years ago,” he continued.
“The Border Czar”
“It’s the fact that Kamala Harris, the border czar, opened the American southern border. It’s the fact that the Democratic Party has become explicitly anti-family in some of their policies.”
Trump as “Defender”
Vance ended his conversation on Gowdy’s Sunday Night in America with his opinion on the underrepresentation of parents in public discourse and praising his running mate Trump as a “real defender of parents and families.”
Family Status
It should be noted that while Kamala Harris does not have biological children, she is a stepmother to her husband’s children. Vance has three children with his wife, Usha Vance.
Fertility Issues in the US
Critics of Vance also pointed to the millions of women in the US who have experienced fertility problems, including many who cannot have children at all. According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, 11% of women of reproductive age have experienced fertility issues.
