However, including LGBTQ+ characters in AI companion apps could expand the popularity of digital partners and potentially reduce people’s need for human interactions.

Broader Implications

Somewhat like the popular 2013 film “Her,” if digital partners rise in popularity, it could have broader implications for societal norms around relationships and intimacy.

Disrupting Human Relationships

Studies on digital partners suggest that such technology might disrupt traditional human relationships and could even impact industries like sex work and dating apps, where AI companions could replace human interactions for some users.

Technological and Ethical Considerations

While technological advancements in AI companionship bring new opportunities and options for some, they also raise ethical concerns about over-reliance on digital interactions and the objectification of AI partners.

Very Real Challenges

A 2019 ResearchGate study says, “There are very real challenges ahead, including the potential disruption of human-human intimate relationships, the objectification of women, and the modelling of sexual relationships with partners without emotional or sexual needs.”

Industry Trends and Comparisons

Despite these dystopian challenges and concerns, EVA AI’s move aligns with trends in the digital companionship industry, where apps like Grindr are also exploring AI partners.
