Despite the massive transgender controversy surrounding Imane Khelif, the controversial Algerian boxer fighting in the Olympics, she has successfully fought past top-tier boxers and baseless online harassment to take home an Olympic Gold Medal, and her haters aren’t happy.
Who Is Khalif?
Imane Khalif is a 25 year old boxer who has been representing Algeria in the women’s welterweight category at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Transgender Accusations
Female boxers typically don’t receive much attention in the summer Olympics, but Khalif has been making headlines after her dominant performance brought on accusations about her gender.
The Controversy
Khelif’s dominated so hard in her fight against Italian boxer Angela Carini, a 25-year-old boxer from Naples, Italy that people began to suspect that Khalif was not a cis-gender woman.
Devastating Fight
In a mere 46 seconds, Carini’s Olympic dreams were shattered when the fight ended due to the intense pain inflicted by Imane Khelif’s punches.
She Said Enough
After fighting Khelif, Carini said, “I felt a severe pain in my nose, and with the maturity of a boxer, I said ‘enough,’ because I didn’t want to, I didn’t want to, I couldn’t finish the match.”
Gender Eligibility Test
After this fight, people began looking into Khelif’s past and discovered that she failed a gender eligibility test by the International Boxing Association (IBA).
Medical Tests and IBA Disqualification
The IBA disqualified Khelif from women’s competition after their medical tests suggested she might be “biologically male” due to a “problem with chromosomes and hormones.”
Olympic Participation
Despite her previous disqualification, Khelif was allowed to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), sparking significant debates about gender fairness and athlete safety in women’s sports.
The XY Chromosome
During an interview with the French magazine Le Point, Georges Cazorla, Khelif’s boxing coach, said the test results suggested she has the XY chromosomes that are more typical of a male.
Gender Eligibility Tests
However, these types of gender eligibility tests have been widely disputed, and the IBA has been heavily criticized for their use as chromosome and hormone levels are not necessarily accurate indicators of someone’s gender.
IOC’s Stance on Gender Eligibility
Highlighting the controversial nature of gender eligibility tests, the IOC has not conducted chromosomal tests since 1999 and stopped testing for elevated testosterone levels in 2021.
Prioritizing Fairness
When the IOC made the decision to stop these chromosome and testosterone tests, they said they were prioritizing “fairness, inclusion, and non-discrimination on the basis of gender identity and sex variation.”
Complying With the Rules
Mark Adams, an IOC spokesman, stated, “Everyone competing in the women’s category is complying with the competition eligibility rules. They are women in their passports and it’s stated that this is the case, that they are female.”
Addressing False Reports
Khelif addressed false reports about her gender, stating, “I want to tell the entire world that I am a female, and I will remain a female,” hoping to put the rumors to rest.
Khelif’s Statement
“I send a message to all the people of the world to uphold the Olympic principles, according to the Olympic Charter, to refrain from bullying all athletes because this thing has effects, massive effects. It can destroy people,” Khelif said.
An Unanimous Gold
Despite this controversy, Khelif secured her gold medal by defeating China’s Yang Liu in a unanimous decision thanks to Khelif’s superior defensive strategy and powerful punches, which allowed her to win all three rounds.
Im National and International Reactions
Khelif’s victory has been hailed in Algeria, where she was selected as one of the country’s flag bearers for the Olympic closing ceremony, solidifying her status as a national hero.
The IBA’s Continued Criticism
After her win, the IBA released a statement saying, “Both Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-Ting post testing, did not meet the required eligibility criteria to compete within the female category of our respective events.”
No Doubt
Standing strong against critics, Khelif said after her fight, “I’m a woman like any other woman. I was born a woman, I lived a woman, I competed as a woman, there’s no doubt about that.”
