Following President Biden’s announcement that he is stepping down from the presidential race, not everyone is happy that Kamala Harris immediately took his place.
“Anointing” the VP
The Democratic party continues to receive backlash for allegedly “anointing” Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s presidential nominee without a proper public vote.
Biden Steps Back
This time, it is Black Lives Matter who have criticized the quick switch up and rapidly building support for Harris after President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he would be standing down from the presidential race and endorsed Kamala Harris as his replacement.
No Surprise Here
Biden deciding to step down is not a major surprise in and of itself after his debate performance back in June. His poor performance had many people questioning his leadership skills.
Outpouring of Support
As reported by the Associated Press, Harris received enough support in the first 24 hours from the necessary Democratic delegates in order to officially become the presidential nominee.
Voters Left Out
Black Lives Matter has criticized the Democratic party for moving so quickly and securing Harris a spot on the ballot without allowing voters to make the decision.
Calling For a Snap Primary
BLM called on the Democratic National Committee to host a “virtual snap primary” before the convention set for this August in Chicago.
Manipulating Black Voters?
The Black Lives Matter statement said, “Democratic Party elites and billionaire donors are attempting to manipulate Black voters by anointing Kamala Harris and an unknown vice president as the new Democratic ticket without a primary vote by the public.”
Disregard For Democracy
Continuing, “This blatant disregard for democratic principles is unacceptable. While the potential outcome of a Harris presidency may be historic, the process to achieve it must align with true democratic values.”
Future Predictions
It is not just the lack of voting that BLM has a problem with, but what it could mean for the future of our voting system.
Delegates Are Not Oligarchs
They said, “We do not live in a dictatorship. Delegates are not oligarchs. Any attempt to evade or override the will of voters in our primary system—no matter how historic the candidate—must be condemned.”
The Demands
“We demand an informal, virtual snap primary now that the incumbent president is no longer in the running.”
Making Waves
Kamala Harris has already been breaking multiple records and making waves as the first woman, first Black person, and first person of South Asian descent to serve as vice president.
History in The Making
If Harris is able to defeat former president Trump in the November election, she would be the first ever woman to serve as the President of the United States.
Undermining Her Win?
One of BLM’s major concerns is that Kamala’s win, or anyone else’s for that matter, could be discredited or undermine their win if it was not voted upon.
A Shaky Foundation
Black Lives Matter stated, “Imagine our first Black woman president not having won some sort of public nomination process. The pundits would immediately label it as affirmative action or a DEI [diversity, equity and inclusion] move, and any progress made by a President Harris would be on shaky foundations.”
Upholding Democratic Principles
“If Kamala Harris is to be the nominee, it must be through a process that upholds democratic principles and public participation.”
Valid Concerns
Their worries are valid, especially considering how quickly Republicans jumped on the chance to call Harris a DEI hire.
